When declaring yourself bankrupt, an officer of the courts, an ‘official receiver’ takes control of your debts and assets (including your home if you own it, and vehicles). They will liaise directly with your creditors and use the funds from the sale of your assets to repay your debts. If your assets don’t cover your debts, you may also be required to make monthly repayments for a period of, usually, 12 months.
After 12 months, and provided you have complied with the terms of your bankruptcy, your remaining debts are written off in full.
